How time zones work

How do I convert time between time zones?

Find each place's offset from UTC, then add the difference. For example, India is UTC+5:30 and New York is UTC−4 in summer, so India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead. The catch is daylight saving time: offsets change on different dates in different countries, so the gap isn't fixed. A converter that uses the IANA time zone database, like this one, handles that for you.

Why does the time difference change during the year?

Because countries change their clocks on different dates, and many don't change them at all. The US moves its clocks on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, while the UK and EU change on the last Sundays of March and October. For a few weeks each year the gap between New York and London is 4 hours instead of 5.

Which time zones have 30 or 45-minute offsets?

India (UTC+5:30), Sri Lanka (UTC+5:30), Iran (UTC+3:30), Afghanistan (UTC+4:30), Myanmar (UTC+6:30), Newfoundland (UTC−3:30), central Australia (UTC+9:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45) and New Zealand's Chatham Islands (UTC+12:45).

How do I compare more than two time zones at once?

Use a world clock that shows them side by side. Time Zone Pro for iPhone, Mac and Android puts every city on one screen with its own slider, so dragging one moves them all and you can see who's working and who's asleep.
